One of my many roles in life is serving on the advisory board for East 10th Children’s and Youth Center. I join them for monthly board meetings, and I try to pop in from time to time too. Today (Wednesday) I was able to visit briefly at the center, as the children participated in their postponed “Indy 500” event. The staff set up a “track” and the kids raced around on bicycles, followed by a ceremony where they received medals and trophies.
I stood in the middle of the track, with the children and staff, as we cheered on the participants. It was cute as the children cheered on all of the racers, while waving their checkered flags.
For a moment, I got a taste of what the Kingdom should be. We should be each other’s cheerleaders. We, as the family of God, should want others to succeed. We should be waving flags, sharing encouraging words, edifying others, all with the enthusiasm of children at an “Indy 500” event.
Why don’t we do this enough?
It is easy for us to become individualistic in our faith. Sometimes we spend too much time focusing on the faults we see in others. And, at times, we care more about “our group” and we miss the fact we should be a champion of people. All people are our neighbors after all.
Let’s challenge one another for a moment.
How can we move from being critics to cheerleaders?
It is time for us to want the Kingdom to come on the Eastside of Indianapolis, as it is in Heaven. We should care about that.
This week I encourage you, and me, to cheer others on, like you’re a child watching your friend compete in a parking lot bicycle race!
Blessings!
Pastor Matthew
